Though developments in the theories have been driven by research, by today’s standards there were deficiencies in that research which will be highlighted in the individual components of this topic:
Apart from describing the theory you have chosen and its weaknesses, you must identify the specific research methodology weaknesses inherent in the development of that theory.
The Motivation theory to be analysed for this assignment is Herzberg's Motivation - Hygiene Theory.
Solution
Frederick Herzberg an American Psychologist was the first ever to introduce the concept of job enrichment. Herzberg is considered to be an original thinker of management and motivational theories. His book ‘The Motivation to Work’ in 1959 was the first to provide the motivational theories at work places. Herzberg took great care to ensure the theory was well developed and for this he and his colleagues made the extra effort of ensuring the accuracy of the information they received before deriving the theory. The paper aims at analysing the theory and the research methodology involved in formulating the theory. The solution includes diagrams illustrating Herzberg's Motivation - Hygiene Theory.
