Help
The term paper will involve a research effort on current Leadership Development Practices in Fortune 100 companies (the top 100 companies on the Fortune 500 list).
You may access the current list of Fortune 100 Companies at this link:
http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune500/2009/
Students should first summarize and then critique (provide your constructive viewpoints on) three journal articles.
The first article will feature a current Leadership Development Practice at one of the Fortune 100 companies. The second and third articles will provide different Insights/Perspectives on the Leadership Development practice you have chosen to feature (not the specific company, but the practice). For example, you could choose to cover GE's use of its Corporate University in Crotonville, NY and then select an article written about trends with Corporate Universities and an article written about the advantages and disadvantages of Corporate Universities. The articles may not be more than 2 years old and must come from different publications.
Draw on the learnings from our texts with your critiques/commentary on the three articles.
The paper should be up to 5 pages in length, double spaced (no longer). Focus on the most important points to include in the paper.
Note that you will be graded on the quality of the articles selected, the substance of your analysis, and your writing / presentation (including organization of the paper, grammar and spelling).
The article summaries must be in your own words, except where you provide direct quotes (noted with quotation marks and references) from the article itself. APA Guidelines must be followed. If you select articles found on the internet, your reference list must include the links which will take me directly to the articles.
The textbook has a list of articles that can all be googled:
Book: The 2009 Pfeiffer Annual Management Development by Robert C. Preziosi
Book: The Successful Leadership Development Program by Jo-Ann C. Bryne and Richard T. Rees
Solution
The solution provides a summary and critique of the articles on leadership. The articles chosen for the paper are based on leadership.

Article 1:
Transformational Leadership, Initiating Structure, and Substitutes for Leadership: A Longitudinal Study of Research and Development Project Team Performance

Citation:Keller, R. T. (2006). Transformational Leadership, Initiating Structure, and Substitutes for Leadership: A Longitudinal Study of Research and Development Project Team Performance. Journal of Applied Psychology, 202–210.

Abstract: Transformational leadership, initiating structure, and selected substitutes for leadership were studied as longitudinal predictors of performance in 118 research and development (R&D) project teams from 5 firms. As hypothesized, transformational leadership predicted 1-year-later technical quality, schedule performance, and cost performance and 5-year-later profitability and speed to market. Initiating structure predicted all the performance measures. The substitutes of subordinate ability and an intrinsically satisfying task each predicted technical quality and profitability, and ability predicted speed to market. Moderator effects for type of R&D work were hypothesized and found whereby transformational leadership was a stronger predictor of technical quality in research projects, whereas initiating structure was a stronger predictor of technical quality in development projects. Implications for leadership theory and research are discussed.

Article 2:
Transformational Leadership in the Classroom: Fostering Student Learning, Student Participation, and Teacher Credibility

Citation: Bolkan, S., & Goodboy, A. K. (2009). Transformational Leadership in the Classroom. Journal of Instructional Psychology, 296 - 306.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between transformational leadership in college classrooms (i.e., charisma, individualized consideration, intellectual stimulation), student learning outcomes (i.e., cognitive learning, affective learning, state motivation, communication satisfaction), student participation, and student perceptions of instructor credibility (i.e., competence, trustworthiness, goodwill). Participants were 165 students who reported on their instructors’ leadership in addition to their own classroom behavior and learning. Results suggest that all three components of instructional transformational leadership are moderately to strongly associated with all outcome variables. Future research should determine which instructional behaviors communicate transformational leadership in the classroom, across different cultures.

Article 3:
Gates on Gates

Citation: Serwer, A. (2009). Gates On Gates. Fortune International (Asia) Vol. 160 Issue 1 , p40-40, 1p.

Abstract:An interview with Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft Corp. and Bill Gates Sr., a former partner at law firm Preston Gates & Ellis, is presented. When asked about the best advice he received from his father, Gates responds that his father and mother were good at encouraging him to do things he was not comfortable with, exposing him to leadership opportunities. Gates Sr. mentions that he and his wife were involved in parent effectiveness training. Gates claims that he discussed problems with his parents when he was starting Microsoft.
